Below are simple definitions to eight of the "ab-, ac-, or ad-" English language verbs used in the puzzle above:

abdicate 1. To give up power, or a high office formally, especially a throne; resign. Similar words and phrases: renounce, step down, give up. 2. To fail to fulfill a responsibility. [Derived from Latin abdicare "to renounce".]
abjure 1. To give up a previously held belief, especially formally and usually under pressure. Similar words: forswear, recant, resile, retract. 2. To deny oneself something. Synonyms: abstain, deny, disavow, forswear, reject, renounce. (Not to be confused with "adjure" below.) [Derived from Latin ab- "away", plus jurare "to swear".]
abrade To wear away or be worn away by friction; rub hard or scrub. Similar words: chafe, graze, grind, scour, scratch, scrape. [Derived from Latin ab- "away", plus radere "to scrape".]
abrogate To revoke an agreement formally and publicly. Similar words: abolish, annul, do away with, repeal, rescind, retract, revoke. [Derived from Latin ab- "away", plus rogare "to propose a law".]
abscond 1. To run away secretly and suddenly, especially from law enforcement. 2. To escape from a place of detention. Synonyms: bolt, break out, escape, flee, run away. [Derived from Latin ab- "away", plus condere "to store away".]
adduce To present something as evidence, a reason, or proof for consideration. Synonyms: bring forward, cite, give, offer, present, put forward. [Derived from Latin ad- "to", plus ducere "to lead".]
adjudge 1. To judge something or somebody. Synonyms: consider, decide, deem, find, regard. 2. To determine something in a judicial proceeding. 3. To pronounce something by law; declare. 4. To award by declaration of law, as damages. [Derived from Latin ad- "to", plus judicare "to judge".]
adjure 1. To command somebody to de something, especially under oath. Synonyms: charge, command, order, insist. 2. To ask for or request earnestly. Synonyms: appeal, beseech, beg, call, entreat, petition, plead, request. (Not to be confused with "abjure" above.) [Derived from Latin ad- "to", plus jurare "to swear".]
