Thanksgiving Day Fun Facts

Thanksgiving Day, as it is celebrated in the United States commemorates a feast held in 1621 by the Pilgrims and the Wampanoag. Canada also celebrates Thanksgiving Day, on the second Monday in October. Many cultures and countries celebrate the harvest which is similar to the American custom of Thanksgiving Day.

In the United States, it is Thanksgiving Day tradition to gather with family and friends for a large meal, many times a feast. Traditional American dishes on the Thanksgiving Day menu include turkey and stuffing, (called dressing in certain areas, especially in the southern United States), mashed potatoes and gravy, cranberry sauce, sweet potatoes or yams, pumpkin pie, and an abundance and variety of other side dishes and desserts.

Prior to the meal, many families gather in front of the television to watch the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, which began in 1924. After the meal many again gather around the TV to watch a professional football game or two.

Although customs vary from family to family and from region to region, one common tradition across the United States is that Thanksgiving Day marks the beginning of the Christmas shopping season.
