West Virginia's New River flows northward through the state from Hinton to Fayetteville. Over fifty miles of the river area is protected by the U.S. National Park Service as the New River Gorge National River. Known for its recreational activities, a popular one being white water rafting, the 70,000 acre plus, park is home to the deepest river gorge in the Appalachian Mountains, and one of the nation's oldest rivers, (despite its name).
