The Commonwealth of Virginia is home to what historians claim is the first permanent European settlement in the United States. English colonists settled in the area in 1607 and Jamestown served as the capital of the colony of Virginia for over eight decades. Today Jamestown, (or Jamestowne) is registered as a National Historic Site, as part of the Colonial National Historic Park, managed by the U.S. National Park Service.
Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip of Great Britain have visited Jamestown; first in 1957, and again in May of 2007 to celebrate the commemoration of the 400th anniversary of the founding of Jamestown.
