Places to Go and Things to Know: Utah

The state of Utah has several areas designated as national parks. Among those are Bryce Canyon National Park in southwestern Utah. At Bryce, the sandstone canyons have been carved by erosion, leaving a colorful array of rock strata visible, thus the park is known for some of the most spectacular rock formations in the world.

Other national park units within the state of Utah include: Arches National Park, Canyonlands National Park, Capitol Reef National Park, and Zion National Park.

There are also a number of national monuments managed by the National Park Service, including: Cedar Breaks, Dinosaur, Hovenweep, Natural Bridges, Rainbow Bridges, and Timpanogos Cave.

National Historic Trails that run through the state include: California National Historic Trail, Mormon Pioneer National Historic Trail, Old Spanish National Historic Trail, and Pony Express National Historic Trail.

There is also a popular national recreation area in the state: Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, home to one of the largest artificial lakes in the world, Lake Powell. (Lake Powell extends into northern Arizona, and is formed behind Glen Canyon Dam on the Colorado River, upstream from the Grand Canyon.)
