Places to Go and Things to Know: South Dakota

The legendary Black Hills of South Dakota are in the western part of the state, extending into northeastern Wyoming. The highest point in the Black Hills, and the state overall, is Harney Peak on the northeast side of which is located the famous Mount Rushmore National Memorial. A tribute to United States history carved in granite, the memorial was created by sculptor Gutzon Borglum and completed, (after his death), by his son Lincoln. Mount Rushmore displays the (huge) countenances of four former U.S. presidents: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, and Theodore Roosevelt, and is the top tourist attraction in the state of South Dakota. The area is managed by the U.S. National Park Service. See their Web page: Mount Rushmore National Memorial for more information.
