Places to Go and Things to Know: North Dakota

Badlands National Park is located in southwestern South Dakota. However, "badlands" refer to deeply eroded and barren land.

Theodore Roosevelt National Park in western North Dakota has a scenic display of rugged Badlands where erosion has created a multitude of rock formations and vegetation is scarce. Also in the Roosevelt park is a section of President Theodore Roosevelt's Elkhorn Ranch, and Wind Canyon, an eroded area with petrified forest remains.

The state of North Dakota has several nicknames. The Sioux State, as it is sometimes called, originates from the Dakota people who lived there when the area was made a territory of the United States.

North Dakota is also called the Flickertail State, in reference to the flickertail ground squirrel that is commonly found in the central part of the state.

The Peace Garden State is another nickname sometimes applied to North Dakota. This refers to the International Peace Garden that the state shares with Manitoba, Canada.
