Places to Go and Things to Know: New Hampshire

Concord is the state capital and Manchester is New Hampshire's largest city.

The White Mountains of New Hampshire cover a portion of the state and are home to the highest point in the northeastern United States. Mount Washington, at 6,288 feet (1,917m) is part of the Presidential Range of the White Mountains. The White Mountain Range is in turn, part of the Appalachian Mountain Range. The Appalachian Trail crosses the summit and the mountain is a popular spot for hikers, although visitors can now drive to the top of the mountain.

The area around the high peak is part of the (New Hampshire) Mount Washington State Park, which is surrounded by the White Mountain National Forest.

A weather station and observation station are located at the summit, and one of the highest recorded wind velocities on record, 231mph, (372 km/h) was measured there in 1934.

The largest lake in New Hampshire is Lake Winnipesaukee, near the southern end of the White Mountain range. The lake covers an area of approximately 72 square miles, (190 sq km), and is one of the headwaters of the Merrimack River. The highlight of a popular resort area, with many recreational activities, the lake is known for its tremendous beauty and its (approximately) 300 islands.
