Playa lakes or dry lakes are found in arid regions of the world. In Nevada some of these playas, created by closed basins in mountain valleys, fill with water during seasonal snowmelts. Others, such as the dry lake beds where the mysterious Area 51 is located, no longer fill with water. An evaporated seasonal lake leaves the ground surface smooth and hardened by the sun. The playa at Black Rock Desert in Nevada has been utilized to set land speed records due to its expansive flat surface.
The playa of Black Rock Desert is what remains of the ancient Lake Lahontan that existed during the last ice age. The Bureau of Land Management protects the area around Black Rock Desert today.
