Places to Go and Things to Know: Minnesota

Minnesota is known as the "Land of 10,000 Lakes". However, there are actually a few thousand more than that in reality. One ancient lake that left remnants was Lake Agassiz. Lake Agassiz was a huge glacial lake that once covered much of what is now northwestern Minnesota and eastern North Dakota, as well as southern Manitoba, and southwestern Ontario. At one time it was larger than all of the Great Lakes combined.

Lake Winnipeg, Lake Winnipegosis, Lake of the Woods, and Lake Manitoba are what remains of the magnificent Lake Agassiz. The rest of the area is a now fertile agricultural plain.

Another of Minnesota's numerous lakes is the main source where the mighty Mississippi River has its beginnings. Lake Itasca is a small body of water in northern Minnesota, near Bemidji. Minnesota's oldest state park surrounds the area and contains numerous other lakes. Visit Itasca State Park's Web site for more information.
