The White Mountains which run through New Hampshire and Maine are the most steep and wild mountains in New England. The highest peak in the state of Maine, Mount Katahdin, 5,267 feet or 1605 meters, is part of Maine's Baxter State Park, and lies within the White Mountain Range. The White Mountains are part of the larger Appalachian Mountain Range and the famed Appalachian Trail crosses the Whites and reaches its northern end at Mount Katahdin.
