Louisiana's largest lake is Lake Pontchartrain. Located in the southeast region of the state, the brackish body of water is an actual estuary and the second largest salty body of water within the United States, (after the Great Salt Lake, Utah). The Lake Pontchartrain Causeway, which bisects the lake into a east and west side, is 24 miles long and is said to be the longest water bridge in the world. Although the lake has long been internationally known, it became commonly recognized after receiving much coverage during the tragic aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
