The word "Republican" as used in the puzzle above, (and in the Colorado Word Search and Nebraska Word Search puzzles), refers to the Republican River, which rises in eastern Colorado and flows along the southern border of Nebraska into northern Kansas. The river is formed by the North Fork of the Republican River and the Arikaree River. The Republican joins with the Smoky Hill River at Junction City to become the Kansas River.

The Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve is a 10,894 acre area of prairie land protected by the National Park Service. This type of tallgrass prairie ecosystem once covered a large portion of central North America.

Pawnee Rock Park, a state historic site in Kansas, protects the famous Santa Fe Trail landmark, Pawnee Rock. This sandstone structure marked the halfway point of the Santa Fe Trail and was well known to travelers and Native Americans in the area.

Did You Know? Kansas ranks first among the states in wheat production although its production fluctuates from season to season, depending on climate conditions.
