From east to west, the eight main islands that make up the state of Hawaii are: Hawaii, Maui, Kahoolawe, Lanai, Molokai, Oahu, Kauai, and Nihau.
The island of Hawaii is much larger than the other islands, thus it is often referred to as the "Big Island". Oahu, however, is the most populous of the Hawaiian Islands. Oahu is home to the state's capital and largest city, Honolulu. The island is sometimes referred to as the "Gathering Place". (Honolulu is the birthplace of the United States President Barack Obama.)
