Places to Go and Things to Know: Delaware

Delaware was the first of the 13 original colonies to ratify the Constitution of the United States. That historic event took place on December 7, 1787. To mark the event, the state's official nickname is the First State.

The Swedish were the first European colonizers to settle in what in now present-day Delaware. In 1638, a Swedish expedition built a fortified trading post and named it Fort Christina in honor of the Swedish queen. The area is located in present-day Wilmington, Delaware's largest city.
