Colorado leads the nation in attracting visitors to ski resorts. The state has many major ski areas including those in and around Aspen, Telluride, and Vail.
The settlement of Aspen began as a mining camp during the Colorado Silver Boom of the late 19th century and would not become the famous ski resort area for over 50 years. Telluride, Colorado also had its beginnings as a mining camp, (for gold). Telluride did not establish ski slopes until the 1970s. Vail, Colorado, on the other hand was established in 1962 with ski resorts in mind.
