Places to Go and Things to Know: Alabama

A National Monument in northeastern Alabama, Russell Cave, contains archaelogical remains which shows that Native Americans lived there for roughly 9000 years, from approximately 6500 BCE to 1650 CE. According to the National Park Service web site, the cave "contains the most complete record of prehistoric cultures in the Southeast".

Also in northeastern Alabama, is the Little River Canyon National Preserve. This 14,000 acre area was authorized as a preserve in 1992 to protect the canyon area formed by the Little River which flows across Lookout Mountain.

Did You Know? The official state bird of Alabama is the Yellowhammer, a European bunting of the finch family. Buntings are passerine birds, meaning they are perching birds that live near the ground. Most passerines are songbirds.
