A long-time placekicker for the Philadelphia Eagles, David Akers, was born in Lexington, Kentucky and attended the University of Louisville. Akers played short stints for the Altanta Falcons, Carolina Panthers, Washington Redskins, and Berlin Thunder, (of NFL Europe), until finding making his home with the Philadelphia Eagles in 1999. During his career with the Eagles, Akers has been a three-time Pro Bowl selection and consistently accurate time after time.

Hall of Fame pro quarterback Johnny Unitas played his college career for the University of Louisville, compiling 3,139 yards and 27 touchdowns. After college, he was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the ninth round but released before the season began. Unitas was working construction jobs when the Baltimore Colts signed him in 1956, and the rest, as they say is history.

Unitas led the Colts to two NFL Champisonships in 1958 and 1959, (prior to the Super Bowl), and to Super Bowl V in 1970, which the Colts won.

Unitas was a ten-time Pro Bowl Selection, a record he held for quarterbacks, until it was tied by Brett Favre in 2008. He also won numerous individual awards in his football career and was voted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1979.
