There are over four thousand documented species of lizards in the world today, making it the most abundant group of reptiles known. Lizards vary in size from the large Komodo dragon, with the largest recorded specimen reaching a maximum of 3.3 meters, (almost 11 feet), to the tiny Monito gecko, which grows to around one inch in length at maturity.

The giant Komodo dragon is a monitor lizard found on the Indonesian islands and is a protected species on the appropriately named Komodo Island, where the lizard is known as "ora" to the locals. The Komodo lizard's average life span is around 50 years. The animal's weight varies depending on the most recent feeding. (A Komodo can consume up to 80% of it's weight at one meal.) According to information from the Komodo National Park, the average weight for an adult in the wild is 70 kilograms, or around 154 pounds, although rare individuals have been found that weigh twice that much. The large lizard's main diet, where available is carrion, but when forced to hunt it will prey on wild buffalo, deer, snakes and other reptiles, domesticated goats, and small mammals.

The tiny Monito gecko, on the other hand, feeds on spiders and insects, and grows to a maximum size of approximately 36 millimeters, (1.42 inches). The Monito gecko, found on the island of Puerto Rico, was listed on the endangered species list in 1982 by the US Fish and Wildlife Service.

Did You Know? The banded gecko is the most widespread species of gecko lizards in North America.
