Presidents' Day

Presidents' Day, celebrated on the third Monday of February, is a legal U.S. holiday to honor the birthdays of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln.

George Washington born February 22 1732, in Westmoreland County, Virginia. Washington was, of course, the first president of the United States, and served from 1789 to 1797. He was succeeded by John Adams, who had served as vice-president in Washington's administration. In his farewell address, Washington's opinion on foreign policy could be summed up in this sentence: "The great rule of conduct for us in regard to foreign nations, is, in extending our commercial relations to have as little political connection as possible . . . ."

Abraham Lincoln, born February 12, 1809 in Kentucky, near present-day Hodgenville. Lincoln was the sixteenth president of the United States, in office from 1861 to 1865. Early in his life, Lincoln read Life and Memorable Actions of George Washington by Mason Locke Weems. The book was thought to have influenced his political philosophy throughout his life. One of Lincoln's most famous speeches, the Gettysburg Address was delivered in 1863, just two years prior to his untimely death. Lincoln was succeeded by his vice-president, Andrew Johnson.
