Fun Facts

A parlor game is a game suitable for playing indoors, usually by a group of people. Board games, card games, charades, and word games, are examples of parlor games. Although crossword puzzles are considered word games, they do not generally fall into the category of a parlor game because they are more of a solitary activity. Charades is an example of a parlor word game.

There are literally hundreds of card games. Some of the more popular ones in the United States include: bridge, crazy eights, go fish, euchre, hearts, old maid, pinochle, rook, spades, and dozens of variations of poker, with "Texas hold 'em" being one of the most popular poker games currently being played.

Variations of board games are also quite numerous. Four of the oldest board games still popular today are backgammon, checkers, chess and pachisi. Archaeologists have discovered games similar to backgammon that date to 3000 BCE. Chess is believed to have originated in India prior to the 6th century, and Pachisi, called the national game of India, also originated there in ancient times.
