2010 Film on Secretariat

A recent movie filmed in Kentucky was the Walt Disney production Secretariat. Filming at the Lexington race course, Keeneland, began on September 28, 2009. Extras in the movie scenes shot there are local residents. Parts of the film were also shot at the famous Churchill Downs in Louisville, home of the Kentucky Derby.

The film focuses on the lives of the famous thoroughbred, 1973 Triple Crown winner Secretariat, his trainer, and his owner, the "first lady of racing", Penny Tweedy. Actress Diane Lane plays the role of Penny. Lane is known for her role in the 2002 film Unfaithful for which she was nominated for an Oscar, (Best Actress in a Leading Role). John Malkovich plays the trainer. (Malkovich has twice been nominated for a supporting actor Academy Award for his roles in Places in the Heart, (1984), and In the Line of Fire, (1993)

Fred Thompson plays the role of Bull Hancock, a noted horse breeder. Dylan Walsh plays the role of Penny's husband.

The movie, written by Mike Rich, is directed by Randall Wallace. The film's release date was October 8, 2010.
