The July 4th Holiday

In 1776, after the Declaration of Independence was adopted by the United States Congress, John Adams wrote of Independence Day, in a letter to his wife Abigail, that the day "will be celebrated by succeeding generations, as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance . . . with pomp and parade, with . . . bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other. . . ." His prognostication proved to be accurate, as the day is celebrated across the nation and around the world as a major U.S. holiday.

Being a summer holiday, festivities center around outdoor activities with family and friends. Picnics, barbeques, parades and parties are the norm, with a fireworks (Adams' "illuminations") display at night to top off the holiday celebration. As a day off from work, most U.S. employers designate the Monday that falls closest to the fourth whenever possible.
