American racecar driver A.J. Foyt is a Houston native. Foyt dropped out of high school to become a mechanic and start racing cars. He would go on to become the first four-time winner of the Indianapolis 500, winning in 1961, 1964, 1967, and 1977. Also during his illustrious career he won seven United States Auto Club championships.
Famous wealthy recluse Howard Hughes was born in Houston, Texas in 1905.
Lyndon B. Johnson's first job after college graduation was as a teacher of public speaking at Sam Houston High School, in Houston, Texas. It was said Johnson was demanding of his students and that he, himself worked extremely hard. However, just as he began his second year of teaching, he accepted his first political job, (as secretary to newly elected Congressman Richard Kleberg, of Corpus Christi, Texas. The rest, as they say, is history. Lyndon Baines Johnson would go on to become the 36th president of the United States.
Long-time CBS newsman Dan Rather's early job as a reporter with a Houston television station and his subsequent coverage of Hurricane Carla in 1961 brought him to the attention of national CBS News Executives.
Multiple Grammy winner Kenny Rogers, born in Houston, Texas in 1938, formed his first band while attending high school. Rogers would go on to win Grammy Awards in 1977, 1979, and 1987. He also garnered an Entertainer of the Year award from the Academy of Country Music in 1978 and Best Male Vocalist of 1979 from the Country Music Association.
