Interesting Facts on Home Renovations

According to CNN Money, a homeowner completing a bathroom addition to a home can expect to recover almost 75 percent of the cost of the construction in added value if the home is sold. For example, if the addition cost $30,000, the homeowner can expect to recover $22,500 in added value during a sale. Also, according to CNN Money, a homeowner can expect to recoup 85 percent of the cost of a remodeling job on an existing bathroom if the home is sold.

Slightly more than 80 percent of the renovation cost may be returned on a major kitchen remodel if the home is sold, 87.2 percent on replacing vinyl siding, 73.9 percent on a roof replacement, and the homeowner can expect to recover more than 80 percent of the cost of replacing windows.

According to an article on MSNBC.com, bathroom remodeling and vinyl siding replacement brings the homeowner the biggest returns on their renovation investments, stating that at a sale, the homeowner can expect to recover 102.2 percent of the cost of a "midrange" bathroom makeover and 103.6 percent of the cost of replacing siding. The article does clarify, however, that the percentages can be much higher or much lower.

The Web site Bankrate.com lists the "five most popular home improvement projects" as: bathroom remodeling, kitchen remodeling, remodeling and room additions, floor coverings, and painting and wall covering.

It should be noted that as home values have declined, the percentage of return on renovations have also declined.
