Common Garden Produce

Arguably the most popular garden plant in the United States is the tomato. A staple in garden plots across rural America, tomato plants are also common in the suburbs, grown in pots on decks and window sills, anywhere the climate will support the long growing season the plants require to produce mature fruit properly.

The first known cultivated tomato plants were grown in South America by the Incas and in Mexico by the Aztecs. Although known centuries earlier, the tomato was not popular with Europeans until the early nineteenth century.

Today, a tomato developed in eastern Europe, the "Black Russian", is considered a novelty because of its dark color.)

Other popular garden plants grown in the United States that originated in the Americas include sweet corn or maize, the bean, potato, pumpkins, and one species of strawberry.

Did You Know? In the United States, cucumbers are pickled more than any other vegetable. Both sweet and sour (dill) cucumber pickles are common. The cucumber is a native plant of India.
