The 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games in Kentucky

The FEI, (Federation Equestre Internationale, or the International Federation for Equestrian Sports), was formed in 1921, and its headquarters are in Lausanne, Switzerland. The World Equestrian Games consists of world championships in eight equestrian sports: dressage, driving, endurance, eventing, jumping, para dressage, vaulting, and reining. The championships are held every four years, mid-way between the Olympic Games.

The 2010 FEI World Equestrian Games were held in Lexington, Kentucky, September 25 through October 10, 2010. This was the first time the games have been held outside of Europe and the first time all eight FEI competitions were to be conducted at one location, namely the Kentucky Horse Park. (In 2014, the games are scheduled to go back to Europe and will be held in Normandy, France.)

The area around the horse park and throughout Lexington underwent much new construction underway for several years prior to the games to accommodate the participants and visitors, including a new indoor arena, and a new outdoor stadium, along with a variety of new structures at the Kentucky Horse Park.

Did you know? Dressage means "training" in French. FEI Rules describe the object of Dressage as "the development of the horse into a happy athlete through harmonious education. As a result, it makes the horse calm, supple, loose and flexible, but also confident, attentive and keen, thus achieving perfect understanding with his rider."
