Christmas Fun Facts

Singing songs and carols is part of the Christmas traditions around the world. Deck the Halls, Rudolph, The Red-Nose Reindeer, and Jingle Bells, are three examples of popular Christmas songs.

Two of the many popular songs sung during the Christmas Season include Silent Night and Santa Claus Is Coming To Town, one of which was written by a Kentuckian.

According to Professor Gary L. Johnston, of Northern Kentucky University, Covington, Kentucky native Haven Gillespie wrote Santa Claus Is Coming To Town in 1934 and the song became so popular it sold 25,000 copies a day at one time. The music for the song was written by New York composer J. Fred Coots. Gillespie was inducted into the Songwriter's Hall of Fame in 1972.

Another Christmas favorite, Silent Night originated in Austria from the pen of Father Joseph Mohr. Austrian headmaster Franz Xaver Gruber wrote the music, and Bishop John Freeman Young, of the Episcopal Diocese of Florida, published the first-known English version of the song in 1859. Hundreds of musical artists have recorded and performed this Christmas carol over the years.
