Electric Cars

Historians believe the first electric cars were built in the 1830s, many decades before gasoline-powered automobiles appeared on the consumer market. However, it was not until the late 19th century that the first practical electric cars were made.

In the United States, the Woods Motor Vehicle Company, based in Chicago, Illinois manufactured the first electric automobiles in this country.

One of the most successful modern-day HEVs (hybrid electric vehicles) available is the Toyota Prius, which was released in Japan to the general public in 1997 and in the US in 2000.

The 2005 Escape Hybrid, the first hybrid SUV (sport-utility vehicle) was launched into the consumer market by Ford Motor Company.

An HEV uses both an electric powered engine and a gasoline or diesel motor that recharges the batteries. Cars that run by purely electrical power run only on their batteries and must be recharged from an electrical outlet source.
