Killdeers

The killdeer, or kill-dee, is the common name for a bird of the plover family found throughout North America. Although plovers are shorebirds, the killdeer generally lives inland. Its nest is most often built on the ground in fields, unkept lawns, and even parking lots. If disturbed while nesting, the bird will feign a broken wing and hobble away from the nest in an attempt to lure the disturbance away from the area of its eggs, or hatchlings. The bird's antics can be quite a complicated ritual to observe.

Members of the plover family of birds are known for running to and fro while capturing food, and for their noisy calls. The killdeer is no exception, deriving its name from the distinctive rapid two-toned call, it incessantly chimes.
