The United States Social Security Administration, (SSA) provides an interesting database on their Web site, which the Internet visitor can search using a variety of criteria. Visitors can search "Popular Names by Birth Year" from 1879 to the most recent records, (the previous calendar year); and the database will display the completed sort to provide the Top 20, Top 50, Top 100, Top 500, Top 1000, names by a given year, based on the sort criteria specified by the user.
Web site visitors can also see "how the popularity of a name has changed over time", as long as the name has remained in the top 1000 most popular names in the United States throughout the years.
Other "Baby Name Data" search criteria provided by the SSA on their Web site includes: popular names by state, (from 1980 to current), top five names over the last 100 years, baby names and city names, top 1000 names by decades back to the 1880s, and popular names of twins.
