The Duryea Motor Wagon Company was established in the US in 1895, by brothers Charles and Frank Duryea. They are credited with building the first successful gas-powered automobile in the US. However, after building thirteen cars, their company closed in three short years due to the unpopularity of the automobile.

Americans, Francis and Freelan Stanley, (twin brothers) built a famous steam car in the early 20th century. Known as the "Stanley Steamer" it set a world land speed record in 1906 of 121 mph. Steam cars were produced until the early 1930s.

The jeep was first mass-produced for the US military in World War II and was called the "peep". The name "jeep" came about as a variant on the pronunciation of the abbreviation for "general purpose" vehicle, namely "g.p.".
