alimentary canal Tubular passage of mucous membrane and muscle that functions in digestion and elimination. The alimentary canal is the principal part of the digestive system and includes the mouth, pharynx, esophagus, stomach, small and large intestines, and cecum. Synonyms: digestive tract, gastrointestinal tract, GI tract.
artery A blood vessel that carries blood from the heart to the body. Synonym: arterial blood vessel.
atrial Of or relating to a cavity or chamber in the body (especially one of the upper chambers of the heart).
brain That part of the central nervous system that includes all the higher nervous centers; enclosed within the skull; continuous with the spinal cord. Synonym: encephalon.
bronchial Relating to or associated with the bronchi. (Bronchi are the two main branches of the trachea. Singular: bronchus.
circulatory Relating to the circulatory system or to circulation of the blood. (The circulatory system is also called the cardiovascular system and refers to the combined functions of the heart, blood and blood vessels in transporting oxygen and nutrients and eliminating waste products.)
fibula The outer and thinner of the two bones of the human leg between the knee and ankle. Synonym: calf bone. (The other long bone in the lower leg is the tibia, [SEE BELOW], both of which are connected to the anklebone, and join together just below the knee.
gastric Relating to or involving the stomach.
heart The hollow muscular organ, (located behind the sternum and between the lungs), that pumps blood through the body.
hepatic Pertaining to or affecting the liver.
ilium The upper and widest of the three bones making up the hipbone.
joint Regions of connection between bones or cartilages in the skeleton. Synonym: articulation.
jugular Veins in the neck that return blood from the head and neck back to the heart. Synonym: vena jugularis.
knee Hinge joint in the human leg connecting the tibia and fibula with the femur and protected in front by the patella.
larynx A hollow cartilaginous structure at the top of the trachea, (or windpipe) in which the voice is produced. Synonym: voice box.
liver The largest internal organ in the human body, a complex glandular organ located in the upper right portion of the abdominal cavity which performs hundreds of different functions. Among its many vital functions are the regulation of chemicals in the bloodstream, aiding in digesting fats, the synthesizing of substances involved in the clotting of the blood, and filtering poisons from the bloodstream.
lung Either of a pair of sac-like spongy organs in the chest used by the respiratory system to provide oxygen to the blood and remove carbon dioxide.
lymph A thin fluid carried in the lymphatic system, (similar to plasma but) containing large numbers of white blood cells.
muscle A tissue or organ of the body consisting predominantly of contractile cells, meaning they have the ability to move.
pancreas A large elongated gland located behind the stomach; secretes fluid to aid in digestion and produces insulin.
pelvis The structure of the skeleton that supports the legs in humans.
renal Of or relating to the kidneys.
skin The outer covering of the body which acts as a protective barrier that prevents vital fluid loss and to prevent harmful microorganisms from entering the body.
skull The bony skeleton of the head. The skull protects and encloses the brain, and also provides structure for the attachment of facial muscles and the mouth.
spinal Of or relating to the spine or spinal cord. (The spine is the series of vertebrae forming the axis of the skeleton and protecting the spinal cord, commonly called the backbone. The spinal cord is a major part of the central nervous system which conducts sensory and motor nerve impulses to and from the brain to many parts of the body.
spleen A large oblong organ, normally on the left side of the human body between the stomach and the diaphragm; produces cells involved in immune responses and removes worn out blood cells from the bloodstream.
stomach The principal organ of the digestive system; a muscular sac-like organ of the the alimentary canal.
tarsal Refers to any bone of the tarsus. (The tarsus in human beings are the bones of the ankle and heel collectively.)
teeth Hard bone-like structures in the mouths of vertebrates; used for biting and chewing. Teeth are the hardest structures in the human body.
throat The common name for the pharynx. (The pharynx is a muscular passageway to the stomach and lungs. Located in the front part of the neck, the pharynx connects the nose and mouth with the trachea (windpipe) and esophagus and serves as a passageway for both air and food.)
tibia The inner and thicker of the two bones of the human leg between the knee and ankle. Synonym: shinbone. [See Above: fibula]
toe One of the digits of the foot. (A finger is a digit of the hand.)
tongue A mobile mass of muscular tissue covered with mucous membrane and located in the oral cavity; the primary organ of taste, the tongue plays an important role in chewing and swallowing food.
uterus A hollow muscular organ in the pelvic cavity of females; contains the developing fetus. Synonym: womb.
valve A structure in a hollow organ (like the heart) with a flap to insure one-way flow of fluid through it.
vein A blood vessel that carries blood from the capillaries toward the heart; all veins except the pulmonary carry unaerated blood. Synonyms: vena, venous blood vessel.
