Word Search Puzzle Trivia

The newspaper based in Oklahoma City known as The Oklahoman published an article March 13, 2004 in which Norman Gibat is given credit for creating the first word search puzzle. The article, written by staff writer Leonard Jackson credits the Selenby Digest with publishing the first word search puzzle in the March 1, 1968 issue. Gibat called it an "Oklahoma anagram." He used the names of Oklahoma cities and towns as the answer words.

Today, word search puzzles are marketed under a variety of names including: word find, word seek, find a word, circle a word, mystery word, and et cetera.

Although word search puzzles are not quite as popular as crossword puzzles, the fan base for this type of puzzle continues to grow.
