"American Idol" held the top post for most popular "reality" shows prior to the debut of "Dancing with the Stars".

"American Idol" debuted in the summer of 2002 in the United States on the FOX network as a variation of the British show, "Pop Idol", and was an instant hit, as amateur singers and musicians vie to become the nation's top choice.

The contestants must be between the ages of sixteen and twenty-eight. Past winners of note on the show have included: Carrie Underwood, Taylor Hicks, and Kelly Clarkson.

The "Biggest Loser" is another popular "reality" TV show that also airs in variation across the world. It premiered in the US in October of 2004 on the NBC network.
