TV Trivia: Standup comedians and sitcoms

In addition to the comedian who is the answer to puzzle clue 7 Down above, there are a number of standup comics who have made their way onto our television screens on a regular basis through their own situation comedies. From Roseanne to Bill Engvall to Ray Romano to Tim Allen to Redd Foxx to Drew Carey, the variety of comics and their material spans a wide spectrum.

When thinking about comics on the television screen, however, Bill Cosby is arguably one of the most successful. His first regular television appearances begin with the old TV drama I Spy, which originally aired in the 1960s. His first sitcom was The Bill Cosby Show later in the same decade. However, the classic best known to television fans is The Cosby Show which ran from the mid-1980s until 1992 and brought into our homes and our popular culture the memorable and lovable characters known as the Huxtable family: Cliff, Clair, Sondra, Denise, Theo, Vanessa, and Rudy.

On the other end of the sitcom spectrum we met the Conner family: Roseanne, Dan, Becky, Darlene, D.J., and Aunt Jackie. The Conners were a working class family struggling to get by from paycheck to paycheck. The show introduced controversial subjects to American TV audiences as part of the normal daily routine of the characters. Roseanne was highly successful in its original run from October 1988 to May 1997 and won a number of viewer awards.

Did You Know? The character of Rudy Huxtable was originally intended to be male.
