The police drama referred to in clue 36 Across in the TV crossword puzzle above was first broadcast on NBC in 1981 and reruns can still be viewed in syndication. The show starred Daniel J. Travanti, Joe Spano, Michael Conrad, and Veronica Hamel, among others. During the seven seasons the show originally ran, it garnered 98 Emmy Award nominations and for the 1981-1982 season all the Emmy nominees for "Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series" were from this one television series. The series as a whole won four Emmy Awards for "Outstanding Drama Series".

Dennis Franz, who would go on to become best known to television audiences as Detective Andy Sipowicz in NYPD Blue, played the role of Lt. Norman Buntz on the series referred to here. Joe Spano, who played first sergeant, later Lieutenant Henry Goldblume on the show, is known today for his recurring role as FBI Special Agent Tobias Fornell on NCIS. Daniel Travanti earned two Emmy Awards for his role as Station Captain Frank Furillo. Michael Conrad also won two Emmy Awards, (Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series), for his portrayal of Sergeant Phil Esterhaus. Vernoica Hamel played Public Defender Joyce Davenport and is best known to TV audiences today as Jack's mother, Margo Shephard in the show referred to 42 Across.
