On this date in 1787, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, delegates from 12 states with George Washington presiding, met to write a new constitution for the young United States. The Articles of Confederation convened, the first constitution used by the young nation was set aside. By June of the following year, nine states had ratified and the new document and it went into effect.
