Born on this date in 1717, archduchess of Austria and queen of Hungary and Bohemia, (1740-1780) Maria Theresa. She unified the Austrian monarchy in the 18th century and gave birth to 16 children, including Marie-Antoinette who would later become queen of France. Two of her sons also went on to become emperors, Joseph II and Leopold II.
Born on this date in 1857, British physician and entomologist, Ronald Ross, remembered for discovering that mosquitoes are transmitters of malaria. Ross won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1902.
Born on this date in 1914 in Alabama, American boxing champ, Joe Louis. He defeated James Jack Braddock by knockout in June 1937 to become the heavyweight champion of the boxing world. Louis went on to successfully his title 25 times. He was elected to the Boxing Hall of Fame in 1954 and died in 1981.
