This Date in History

On this date in 1889 the Eiffel Tower was opened to the public at the World's Fair being held in Paris.

On this date in 1931 Willie Howard Mays Jr. was born in Fairfield, Alabama. Also known as the Say Hey Kid, Willie Mays would go on to become a legend in American baseball history.

On this date in 1935 an executive order signed into law by then President Franklin D. Roosevelt created the Works Progress Administration (WPA). The WPA provided jobs on public projects to unemployed Americans during and following the Great Depression. At its high point in 1936, the WPA employed 3.2 million workers. Projects included roads, airports, school buildings, hospitals, public parks and more; many of which are still in use today.

On this date in 1994 the Channel Tunnel that carries a rail link under the English Channel officially opened for traffic, (although it did not reach full operating capacity until December 1994). The British Queen Elizabeth II and the French President Francois Mitterrand officiated at the opening. The 32 mile (50.4km) long tunnel took seven years to construct and is called one of the greatest engineering feats of the 20th century. Utilizing the tunnel, a rail trip between London and Paris can now be completed in approximately three hours.

In the US, today is National Nurses' Day.

Today is also International No Diet Day.
