--On this date in 1867, Nebraska joined the Union as the 37th state. Lincoln is Nebraska's capital and Omaha is the largest city.

--On this date in 1872, US President Ulysses S. Grant signed the Yellowstone Act, setting aside the first national park lands.

--Born on this date in 1904, in Clarinda, Iowa, American jazz bandleader and trombone player, Alton Glenn Miller.

--On this date in 1945 Saudia Arabia and Iran entered World War II on the side of the Allies.

--On this date in 1946 the Bank of England, privately owned for two and a half centuries went under ownership of the government.
