--On this day in 1770 sea captain James Cook ran aground on the Great Barrier Reef. He would claim the east coast of Australia for Britain. Cook is best remembered for "discovering" the Hawaii Islands.
--Born on this date in 1915, American novelist, Saul Bellow, winner of the 1975 Nobel Prize for literature. Bellow's first novel was Dangling Man (1944) and his 1953 release, The Adventures of Augie March, won the National Book Award. Bellow died in 2005.
--Born on this date in 1922, American actress, Frances Gumm, better known as Judy Garland. Garland is best known internationally as "Dorothy" in The Wizard of Oz.
--Born on this date in 1929, American biologist, Edward O. Wilson, the founder of sociobiology. (Sociobiology applies evolutionary principles to the study of the social behavior of animals, including humans.)
