--On this date in 1906, then President Theodore Roosevelt signed the Antiquities Act, which authorized the president to establish national monuments on public, or federal lands. Ten years later in 1916, the National Park Service was establisheds as a branch of the Department of the Interior, in order to have an overseer administration for the increasing number of federal parklands.
--Born on this date in 1916, in Northampton, England, British biophysicist Francis Harry Compton Crick. Crick is remembered for the co-discovery, along with James Watson, of the double-helix structure of DNA. Crick, Watson, and Maurice Wilkins, shared the 1962 Nobel Prize in for their work in physiology.
--Born on this date in 1925, former First Lady of the United States, Barbara Bush. She was born Barbara Pierce, a great-great-great niece of the 14th US president, Franklin Pierce.
