-- On this date in 1793, following his trial for treason, Louis XVI, the deposed King of France was executed by his opposition.
-- Born on this date in 1824, in Clarksburg, Virginia, (now in West Virginia), Thomas Jonathan Jackson, better known in American history as the Confederate leader Stonewall Jackson.
-- Born on this date in 1912, in Neisse, Germany, (now Nysa, Poland), American biochemist and Nobel laureate, Konrad Emil Bloch, known for his work on the study of cholesterol and fatty acids. Bloch was also the recipient of the 1988 National Medal of Science.
-- Born on this date in 1940, in Columbus, Ohio, Jack William Nicklaus, who won his first major golf tournament at the age of 16. His first victory in a major pro tournament was the 1962 US Open. Nicklaus would go on to win the Masters tournament six times, the last in 1986, at age 46; and the PGA Championship five times, the first to do so since Walter Hagen in the 1920s.
Born on this date in 1941, in Madrid, Spain, one of the greatest operatic tenors of all time, Placido Domingo. (Domingo first appearance on stage in the US was with the Dallas Civic Opera in 1961.)
-- On this date in 1979, Super Bowl XIII was played at the Orange Bowl in Miami, Florida. The Pittsburgh Steelers, coached by Chuck Noll, defeated the defending Super Bowl champs, the Dallas Cowboys, 35-31. Steelers quarterback, Terry Bradshaw won the game's most valuable player (MVP) award. A feat he would repeat the following January in 1980 when the Steelers rolled over the Los Angeles Rams, 31-19.
-- On this date in 1982, renowned pediatric surgeon, Dr. C. Everett Koop was sworn in as US Surgeon General, beginning the first of his two terms in the office.
