-- Today is the official inauguration day for the US president in years following a presidential election in the United States. In the original US Constitution, inauguration was to take place on March 4 in the year following the election. However, in 1933 the 20th Amendment to the Constitution moved the date up to January 20. In 1937, when President Franklin D. Roosevelt officially began his second term in office, his inauguration ceremony took place on the appointed new date. To date, since that time all US presidents, with the exceptions of Dwight D. Eisenhower and Ronald Reagan's second inauguration ceremony, have been sworn into office on January 20, making the date historical in other respects. For example on January 20, 1961 John F. Kennedy took office as the youngest US president in history up to that time and on January 20, 2009 President Barack Obama officially took office as the first African-American president in to this point in American history.
-- Born on this date in 1930, in Montclair, New Jersey, Edwin Eugene Aldrin, Jr., better known as American astronaut, Buzz Aldrin. Astronaut Aldrin piloted the lunar landing module for the historic Apollo 11 moon landing in 1969, and was the second human to walk on the surface of the moon.
-- On this date in 1980, the Pittsburgh Steelers of the AFC defeated the Los Angeles Rams of the NFC in Super Bowl XIV, played at the Rose Bowl, in Pasadena, California. Steelers quarterback Terry Bradshaw picked up his second Super Bowl MVP award.
-- On this date in 1985, the San Francisco 49ers defeated the Miami Dolphins, 38-16 in Super Bowl XIX, played at Stanford Stadium, in Stanford, California. Joe Montana, quarterback of the 49ers, was chosen as the MVP of the game.
-- According to astrologers, today marks the beginning of the 11th sign of the zodiac, Aquarius, which last through February 18. Aquarius is an air sign, called the Water Bearer, and said to be ruled by the planet Uranus.
