-- On this date in 1776, American Revolutionary leader and pamphleteer, Thomas Paine, published his famous pamphlet Common Sense which urged its readers to support American independence.
-- Born on this date in 1938, in Mobile, Alabama, Baseball Hall of Fame member, Willie McCovey. McCovey was elected National League (NL) 1959 rookie of the year; led the NL in home runs and RBI in 1968 and 1969 and was voted NL MVP in 1969. He was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, in 1986.
-- On this date in 1941, President Franklin D. Roosevelt's lend lease plan was introduced to Congress. A lend lease is defined as: The transfer of goods and services to an ally to aid in a common cause. Historically, the Lend-Lease Act of 1941, was passed to give FDR the power to aid the nations at war against the Axis in WWI and appropriated one million dollars, initially.
-- On this date in 1982 the Cincinnati Bengals and San Diego Chargers of the NFL, played in what is known to football historians as "The Freezer Bowl". Wind chill temperatures were minus 37 degrees Fahrenheit. (The Bengals won the game, which earned them a spot in Super Bowl XVI. However, they lost to the San Francisco 49ers in the championship game.)
