-- On this date in 1788 Connecticut becomes the fifth state to ratify the US Constitution.
-- Born on this date in 1878, in Greenville, South Carolina, psychologist John Broadus Watson. He is best known for founding the school of psychology called behavorism.
-- On this date in 1951, the United Nations (UN) officially opened its headquarters in New York City. The organization was founded following the end of World War II, (on October 24, 1945), to foster and maintain world peace. The organization based its headquarters inside the United States in hopes of a continuing US involvement. The UN originally gave five countries veto power to ensure their confidence that their sovereignty would not be threaten by the decisions of the UN. The five countries were: China, Great Britain, France, the Soviet Union, and the United States. In 1991, when the Soviet Union split, Russia was given that particular veto power.
-- On this date in 1977, Super Bowl XI was played at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California. The game featured the AFC champion Oakland Raiders against the NFC champion Minnesota Vikings. The Raiders, under the guidance of Coach John Madden defeated the Vikings 32-14. After making several key receptions, Raiders wide receiver Fred Biletnikoff was designated the Super Bowl's Most Valuable Player. Raiders running back, Clarence Davis rushed for 137 yards; Fran Tarkenton quarterbacked the Vikings and Ken Stabler was the quarterback for the victorious Raiders. Starting for the Raiders on the offensive line, were Art Shell at left tackle and Gene Upshaw at left guard. This game was the Raiders's first Super Bowl victory. This game also set a place for the Minnesota Vikings in Super Bowl history, inglorious though it might be, they becames the first team to lose four Super Bowl contests, having been defeated in Super Bowls IV, VIII, and IX, prior to this game.
