-- Born on this date in 1785, Jacob Ludwig Karl Grimm, one of the famous Grimm Brothers who created and collected folklore tales.
-- On this date in 1896, Utah entered the Union as the 45th state.
-- Born on this date in 1809, French educator, Louis Braille, who lost his sight at the age of three and went on to invent a writing and printing system for sightless people.
-- Born on this date in 1930, American football player and coach, Don Shula who is best known for coaching the 1972 (NFL) Miami Dolphins through a perfect season, in which they went 14-0 in the regular season, won two playoff games and then reigned victorious over the Washington Redskins in the 1973 Super Bowl. (The Miami Dolphins, under Shula's guidance also won the Super Bowl the following year.) During his tenure as a coach, Shula's teams posted 347 victories.

-- On this date in 1958, Sputnik 1, the first artificial satellite to orbit Earth burned up after reentry into the Earth's atmosphere. The satellite had been in orbit 21 days.
-- Also on this date in 1958, New Zealand mountaineer, Sir Edmund Percival Hillary reached the South Pole, becoming the first person to do so by overland trek since 1912. Hillary, along with his Sherpa guide, Tenzing Norgay were the first humans known to have reached the summit of Mount Everest, (in 1953).
-- On this date in 2007, Nancy Pelosi, Democrat from California, was elected as the first female Speaker of the United States House of Representatives in US history.
