--Born on this date in 1473, Polish astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus, who is best known for his workable model of the solar system with the sun in the center, known as a heliocentric system. Prior to the work of Copernicus, astronomers believed the Earth to be, not only the center of our solar system, but of the Universe.
--On this date in 1771, French astronomer Charles Messier discovered the star cluster known as "M 47".
--On this date in 1986, the Russian space station, Mir was launched into orbit around the Earth. Over the years, the station was a temporary home to numerous astronauts, including several Americans, before being deliberately dumped into the Pacific Ocean in March, 2001.
