--On this date in 1861, Jefferson Davis was made provisional president by the Congress of the Confederate States of America.

--Born on this date in 1892, in Elwood, Indiana, Wendell Lewis Willkie. Willkie is best remembered in US history as challenging FDR's bid for a third term in office. Willkie's running mate was Senator Charles Linza McNary from the state of Oregon.

--Born on this date in 1931, in Lorain, Ohio, American author, Toni Morrison. Morrison is known for her novels, Sula, Song of Solomon, Tar Baby, and Beloved, among others. In 1988, Morrison won the Pulitzer Prize in fiction for her novel Beloved.

--Also, born on this date in 1931, Johnny Hart, American cartoonist, and Reuben Award winner, best known for his comic strips "B.C." and "The Wizard of Id".
